In this episode, Archbridge Institute Director of Programs Ben Wilterdink is joined by Archbridge President and CEO Gonzalo Schwarz for a discussion with Dr. Scott Winship. Scott is a leading scholar on poverty and social mobility. The conversation covers the current state of poverty in the United States, how we should think about social mobility, what national conservatives get right and get wrong, and what lessons (for good or for ill) can be learned from the past several decades of public policies designed to fight poverty and increase social mobility. Scott is a resident scholar and the director of poverty studies at the American Enterprise Institute (AEI), where he researches social mobility and the causes and effects of poverty. Before joining AEI, Scott served as the executive director of the Joint Economic Committee (JEC), where he created the Social Capital Project, a multiyear research project to investigate the evolving nature of social relationships including families, communities, workplaces, and religious congregations. Scott has also been a visiting fellow at the Foundation for Research on Equal Opportunity, where he is remains an honorary member of the board of advisers; a senior fellow at the Manhattan Institute for Policy Research; a fellow in the economic studies department of the Brookings Institution; and the research manager of the Economic Mobility Project at the Pew Charitable Trusts. Scott has also written several studies on economic mobility for the Archbridge Institute.
